Walking Boosts Brain Power

It turns out that any cardio workout has important benefits for brain function because brain derived neutrotrophic factor (BDNF) is involved in the learning process and it seems that cardio exercise increases the production of BDNF. Walk Yourself Out of A Bad Mood

A well-known research study at Duke University showed that walking 30 minutes a day at least 3 times a week is as effective as taking anti-depressant. The research also found that those who walked off a bad mood had more long-lasting benefits than those who took medication. It’s easy to understand why this is for exercise increases endorphins and the mood transmitter serotonin in the brain. Anti depressant do the same but they use chemicals to manipulate to feel better. Find Inspiration in a Good Walk

I always find when I hit a roadblock or just can’t seem to concentrate a good walk will help in inspired thinking. Walking also clears my brain when having to make decisions and helps to make major mental breakthroughs. There is something about the rhythmic, repetitive action of putting one foot in front of the other that seems to foster some inner peace and clarity.

Walking Tip

Before leaving on a walk, I always find that if I sit for a moment and think about all that I have to do or if a problem it is a good time to think about what you are facing for a few minutes. Gather your thoughts and hit the road. It is amazing but once you begin your walk, turn up the tunes on your iPod and then stop thinking of the blockage you are experiencing. Your subconscious will take over and at some point during the walk the answer will often pop into your head.

Clarity will reign and before you know it you will be doing this naturally.

Smart and Easy

Tips for Walking to A Healthier You:

  • Walk with purpose — as if you’re late for an appointment.
  • Make up your own dance moves, use your arms, hop, skip. Make it fun! Who cares what it looks like ( I admit I look a bit nuts with the moves I come up with)
  • Walk with a friend
  • Plug in your Ipod and walk to the beat of your favorite tunes.
  • Remember to breathe.
  • Wear comfortable sneakers and a good pair of socks.
  • Stay away from cotton socks, instead opt for hydrophilic fibers – they absorb moisture better.
  • Use sunscreen.

Walking For Weight Loss

Do you remember when Oprah lost a whole lot of weight and she brought out enough fat in a wheelbarrow to show off what all that nasty fat looks like. She showed us how a pound of fat is equal to 3,500 calories. Basic math will show us that to lose a pound a week, you need to burn 3,500 more calories than you eat each week. The key to losing weight is to burn more calories than you consume. The benefits of walking for at least 30 minutes a day may help you shed a few pounds and in an easy and most enjoyable way.

Not only will the pounds start to shed, but you will see inches come off. Better yet is that when you take care of your body and mind all the rest falls into place and within days your skin will be glowing as well as your spirit. A new you will replace that person who had no motivation to just do it!

I agree that many people should walk more. I see many people circling the parking lot for a close spot when a farther spot is available. Actually, it is better to get the farther spot, because that means that we get to walk more and gain the benefits of walking.

Great hub...2 years ago I used to walk 20 minutes every day and I felt great. Now I don't and don't feel as good. Thank you for reminding me what I should be doing.

Great article on walking. It is my work out of choice and has been for many years now. I learned from a young age that I felt so much better after a good brisk walk. Not only did I feel better but my muscles toned and I lost weight. I have two dogs now and walk every day. Walking is one of the best exercises and the exercise least hard on your bones and joints. Great work here. BTW, I also follow you on Redgage but it's fun to see you here.

one2get2no - I hope you get your groove back . . . I try to remember to take my headphones with me, its amazing when I plug in some music how motivated I get to get moving!

Minnetonka Twin - You know I am really enjoying the connections from Red Gage! Just like getting our feet walking, tapping along with our fingers is also a great motivation to keep going!!! BTW - Is there anything better than taking our pets for a cruise! Mine love it too!

Stacie L - the woods are a great place to walk! I am more partial to the jungle (the streets of NYC!) so much to see as you get to see new things in all the window shops! Anyway you get your walk in, you are sure to feel great!!!
